Russell Brand is often caught up in some sort of controversy and now he's caused outage after accusing the US of terrorism just as the news of the school attack broke.

The comedian and actor tweeted a link last night to an interview he conducted with former Guantanomo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg, writing: "The people who do 'terror' best are the people who decide what 'terror' is."

Twitter users were quick to call Brand out for his bad timing and international relations professor Colin Wright told the author: "You do talk cr*p at times. Not all the time but I'm seeing it more and more."

Brand's tweet coincided with the news that 120 people, mostly children, had been killed in a Taliban assault on a military school in Peshawar.

Begg was held by the American government after being arrested in Pakistan in 2002 and was later released without charge in 2005.

It's the second time this month Brand has faced a backlash on Twitter.

He shared the mobile phone number of a reporter who had requested an interview with 8.7m followers and risked being banned.
